My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2006. Her diagnosis was a frightening realization of the uncertainties of tomorrow. After undergoing surgery, as well as chemotherapy and radiation, my mother became a survivor. Unfortunately, a month after her treatment concluded, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone and soft tissue cancer. My diagnosis was a shock. I was so young (18-years-old) and the thought of facing death at my age was not an option. There were so many things that were left undone – so many years of my life left to live. I had to fight the battle and I had to win! Through the help and support of my family and The Ashley Lauren Foundation, I was able to pull through my tragedy and undergo 7 rounds of chemotherapy, 41 rounds of radiation, 27 blood transfusions and 32 platelet transfusions. Monica Vermeulen, the Director of The Ashley Lauren Foundation and her family were angels that touched our lives with the magic. The Ashley Lauren Foundation assisted financially with bills, groceries, car services to and from the hospital, laptops and other presents, wigs, spa trips, a vacation and anything and everything that was needed. They also provided emotional support, with constant phone calls and hospital visits. The Ashley Lauren Foundation is a haven for those suffering with cancer. It gives patients and their families hope and opportunities that wouldn’t, otherwise, be available. It gives cancer patients the opportunities for miracles. I want to thank The Ashley Lauren Foundation for walking with me through this long journey and for being there for me every step of the way. I couldn’t have gone through this without them.
